The phoneless retreat for the broken hearted

Image
At breakup bootcamp, the first house rule is to digitally detox. No phones are allowed. The intimate gatherings, which average about 14 people per event, are set up to help newly single women "rewire their hearts." Retreats are held several times a year in upstate New York and Malibu, California. Launched in 2017, Renew founder Amy Chan's mission is to help women mend their hearts through a mix of spirituality and science. A team of all female experts, from psychologists and behavioral scientists to energy healers, conduct group and one-on-one sessions. Also on site: a chef to cook nutritious meals, and zen activities such as alpaca petting, yoga and meditation. It may sound like a tall order to help people move on from former relationships in one weekend, but Chan said the goal is to teach attendees how behavior may assist or detract from that process. "After a breakup, some people go into inspector gadget mode trying to find clues and information to fi...

Fitbit unveils Apple Watch competitor and fitness tracker for kids

Image
Fitbit's latest trackers intend to lure more casual fitness fans, and even kids. The company announced two new products on Tuesday: Fitbit Versa, a smartwatch that is strikingly similar to the Apple Watch, and its first fitness tracker for kids, Fitbit Ace. At first glance, the new Versa's square display and sleek aesthetic a dead ringer for the Apple Watch. But Fitbit hopes its focus on health and fitness -- and its lower price point -- will be key differentiators. Meanwhile, the new Fitbit Ace tracker ($100), designed for kids ages 8 and older, is an interesting move for the company. Rather than playing catch up to category leaders like Apple, Fitbit intends to get ahead of the curve by marketing a tracker specifically toward kids. The Ace, which is nearly identical to its existing Alta tracker, tracks sleep, steps and physical activity. It intends to encourage children to stay active. The battery lasts for up to 5 days. Fitbit has put in several safe guards in p...

Beyond passwords: Companies use fingerprints and digital behavior to ID employees

Image
More companies are ditching passwords and using fingerprints and other biometrics to stop hackers. "We're seeing a very rapid evolution from what used to be passwords, then smart cards, and now to biometrics," said Alex Simons, director of program management in Microsoft's identity division. Biometric authentication uses face, fingerprint or iris scans to quickly confirm a person's identity. You probably already use itap by touching the home button to unlock your phone. In the workplace, employees are increasingly using biometrics to log in to phones and computers, and to access data stored on those devices and in the cloud. Spiceworks, a professional network for people in the IT industry,  says  nearly 90% of businesses will use biometric authentication by 2020, up from 62% today. Fingerprint scanning is currently the most common type of biometric authentication: 57% of organizations use it. Far fewer, just 14%, use facial recognition. Companies su...

Apple unveils red iPhone 8

Image
The iPhone   is once again seeing red. Apple   ( AAPL )  on Monday announced a special edition iPhone 8 and 8 Plus with a red aluminum body. The models are in partnership with (RED), a nonprofit that works to fight AIDS and HIV in Africa. The devices are identical to the iPhone 8 devices Apple launched in September. They join an existing lineup of iPhone 8 colors, such as gray, silver and gold. The red smartphones, available in 64GB and 256GB models, start at $699 and $799, respectively. This is the second consecutive year Apple has unveiled iPhone models in red. Last year, the special edition of the iPhone 7 and 7 Plu s  commemorated a 10-year long partnership between Apple and (RED). Apple has long developed (RED)-themed products, such as special edition iPhones, Beats headphones and red accessories for the iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. An unknown portion of the proceeds from those products go to Global Fund HIV/AIDS grants for testing, couns...

Netflix is unstoppable

Image
"It's good to be the king." That's a famous line by Mel Brooks in "History of the World: Part I." Unfortunately, this cult comedy classic is not available on Netflix. But make no mistake: Netflix is the king of Hollywood, Silicon Valley and Wall Street. Netflix's   ( NFLX )  stock is up more than 60% this year — significantly better than  Facebook   ( FB ) ,  Apple   ( AAPL ) ,  Amazon   ( AMZN )  and  Alphabet   ( GOOGL ) , the owner of Google and YouTube. Netflix will report its first quarter earnings on Monday afternoon, and analysts are forecasting phenomenal growth. They're expecting a 40% jump in sales from a year ago, 60% more profit than a year ago, and 7.5 million more subscribers just since the previous quarter. Netflix undeniably has momentum — and it's getting more love from big media companies. Netflix announced an expanded partnership on Friday with cable giant and NBCUniversal owner  Comcast   (...

WeWork is buying Naked Hub to grow in China

Image
US coworking space startup WeWork is buying one of its major rivals in China. WeWork, which is valued at around $20 billion, said Thursday it's acquiring Naked Hub in a deal that will give it a much bigger chunk of the Chinese   market. The companies make money by persuading professionals to rent spots in stylishly decorated working spaces that promise a sense of community. The US company declined to say how much it was paying for Naked Hub, which was founded in 2015, but multiple reports put the sum at $400 million. "In Naked Hub, we have found an equal who shares our thinking about the importance of space, community, design, culture, and technology," WeWork CEO Adam Neumann said in a blog postannouncing the deal. WeWork moved into China less than two years ago, opening its first coworking space in Shanghai. Buying Naked Hub will nearly triple the number of locations the US company has in China, increasing the total from 13 to 37. WeWork said there are no ...
